Bruce Vincent receives 2013 Award

Bruce H. Vincent, president and director of Swift Energy Company, is the petroleum industry’s 2013 “Chief Roughneck.”

Created in 1955 to honor the lifetime achievements of industry leaders, the Chief Roughneck Award is presented annually by U.S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc., a subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation.

Vincent received the award on November 8, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas, during the 84th annual meeting of the Independent Petroleum Association of America.

U.S. Steel Senior Vice President of Tubular Operations David Britten presented Mr. Vincent with the traditional Chief Roughneck bronze bust and accompanying hard hat.

“Bruce has served this industry for many years. He has created a culture at Swift Energy Company based on values that are the foundation of American business success,” Britten said.

“His enthusiasm and integrity inspires those around him in their pursuit of excellence,” he added. “Bruce represents the passion and commitment that propels this nation’s energy industry and these qualities make him a perfect choice for the 2013 Chief Roughneck Award.”

Bruce H. Vincent joined Swift Energy Company in 1990 and has served in a variety of strategic positions. He has been president of Swift Energy Company since November 2004 and a member of the board of directors since 2005, currently serving on the board’s executive committee.

Active in numerous industry and trade organizations, Vincent is the immediate past chairman of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA). He is a member of the IPAA executive committee and regional board of directors, as well as past director of the national association and past chairman of the capital markets, communications, international and program committees.

Vincent is also the immediate past chairman and a member of the board of the Natural Gas Council. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Duke University and a Master of Business Administration in finance from the University of Houston.

The Chief Roughneck Award is widely recognized as one of the industry’s highest honors. U.S. Steel Tubular Products Inc. is the largest fully integrated tubular products manufacturer in North America, with total annual production capability of 2.8 million net tons.

Energy industry customers utilize U.S. Steel Tubular Products’ casing, tubing, line pipe and couplings to help them locate, retrieve, transport and refine the oil and natural gas products that fuel the world.

Swift Energy Company was founded in October 1979 in Houston, by Aubrey Earl Swift, who began working in the oil and natural gas industry in 1955.

The traditional Joe Roughneck bust, originally created by noted artist Torg Thompson and presented to each Chief Roughneck recipient, began life in Lone Star Steel print advertising. According to the company, Joe was adopted by the drilling industry by popular demand, becoming “as universal as a rotary rig.”

Joe began in the imagination of Thompson, best known for his 124-by-20-foot mural, “Miracle at Pentecost,” at Biblical Arts Center in Dallas. For Lone Star Steel Company ads, he drew Joe with the face of a man who had spent long hours working in oilfields.

Today, a Joe Roughneck sculpture can be found in several oil patch parks. Read more in “Meet Joe Roughneck.”
