[1]Working with museum directors, state and national teacher workshop practitioners and other educators, the society has hosted energy education conferences and field trips.
Too few young people understand today’s oil and natural gas business, how it operates, and why it remains a vital American industry – even as we look toward new energy sources.
Community oil and gas museums, historical societies, and other organizations not only preserve a remarkable history, they serve as ambassadors to a skeptical public. They are frontline energy educators.
[2]The 2007 Oklahoma City conference included a field trip to museums in Seminole and Tulsa -- with a stop at the Golden Driller, built in 1953 for the International Petroleum Exposition and now officially a Oklahoma state monument.
This historical society believes the industry’s neglected history of social, economic and technological achievements provides an important context for teaching the modern business of meeting energy demand.
To raise awareness of the industry’s history and increase energy education, AOGHS maintains a communication network of museums [3], historical societies and similar organizations — including companies, professional societies and trade associations, and individuals committed to energy education.
The society, which seeks to build partnerships among many diverse energy education organizations, is administered as a 501 (c)-3 nonprofit program of the Independent Petroleum Association of America Educational Foundation.
Today funded solely by donations, the AOGHS mission is to provide advocacy and service to organizations that preserve U.S. exploration and production heritage.
